Your training plan:
What you can expect in the Bachelor in Sport and Exercise Science

The Bachelor’s programme in Sport and Exercise Science gives you a solid understanding in a broad spectrum of disciplines that underpin sport, exercise and health. During your final year of study you have the choice: You can either specialise in coaching and physical education or in sports management.

During your studies you will acquire knowledge in anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, nutrition and psychology. Further study content includes coaching, motor control, motor learning and exercise testing and training. Using diagnostic exercise and sport-specific assessment tools you will learn how to determine performance and physical fitness. You will identify strengths and weaknesses of athletes and based on these, develop individually optimised training plans.

In addition you will also acquire fundamental knowledge in the management of sport and health businesses, which prepares you for a versatile career in the sector. Through practical exercises in our modern sports and movement laboratory and external internships you will gain valuable experience for your professional future.

Course of study

1st year

After you have explored the structures and functions of the human body, you will study how sport and exercise affect these. You will develop a fundamental understanding of motor, cognitive, physiological and psychological processes. You will also gain knowledge about the influence of nutrition on performance and health and learn how to coach, instruct and lead athletes and teams. In our sports and movement laboratory, you will learn how to carry out sports science measurements and training procedures and practice in various coaching situations. You additionally have the opportunity to learn about and practice some sporting disciplines. During your first internship you will gain insights and experience in a professional field of your choice.

2nd year

In the second year of study you will acquire in-depth, applied knowledge and practically explore some additional sporting disciplines. In the laboratory you will investigate how the body reacts to stress factors generated in different training environments. You will learn which psychological factors influence performance and how you can intervene as a coach. You will also gain insight into the structures of the sports business and acquire a fundamental knowledge of sports management and sports marketing. Your acquired knowledge will be applied in a second internship. We also support you in developing professional core competencies that are relevant for a successful career in the sports and health sector. In preparation for your Bachelor thesis and with a view to a post-graduate study or possible academic career, we will introduce you to research methods in the field of sport and exercise science.

3rd year

Whether coaching and physical education or sports management, in the final year of study you have the choice of which area you would like to specialise in. You will finalise your studies with your bachelor’s thesis on a topic of your interest and passion, which is supervised and supported by an experienced member of our staff.

a) Specialisation Coaching and Physical Education:

Are you interested in teaching physical exercise at school or are you interested in coaching athletes? You can then choose our specialisation coaching and physical education. You will acquire pedagogical and methodological skills necessary to teach sports and to train individual athletes and sports teams. You will be able to plan, implement and evaluate training programmes for different target groups and to get actively involved in the rehabilitation of sports injuries. Additionally, you have the opportunity to acquire a coaching license. For this purpose we cooperate with the Ecole Nationale de l’éducation physique et des sports (ENEPS) in Luxembourg.

b) Specialisation Sport Management:

If you are more interested in the economic side of sports, the specialisation in sport management is the right choice. Here you will acquire knowledge in the areas of project and human resource management as well as trends in sport and sport business. We will teach you the fundamentals of entrepreneurship in sport and provide you with the necessary tools in sports marketing and sponsoring. In addition, you will develop your social and methodical skills in conflict management, intercultural communication, decision-making and negotiation.

My internship in Lisbon within the Sporting Clube de Portugal was a wonderful experience. As well as evolving with the most advanced equipment, I had the opportunity to work with knowledgeable people, such as the leader of the Sports Performance Centre. From coaching the triathlon team to supporting kids during their summer camps, my experience was rewarding.

Johan, Sport and Exercise Science Student

I have always been very interested in the human body, and how it adapts to exercise and training is fascinating. The sports science degree will allow me to work with other people or athletes who are passionate about their sports. Gaining a better understanding of the training of top elite athletes is something I want to know about. LUNEX prepares me for a career in sport and sport science by offering me a course surrounded by competent teachers.

Laura, Sport and Exercise Science Student

I made a 2-month internship in Lisbon with Sporting Club de Portugal and I worked more in depth with the physical & performance area with senior male and female volleyball teams. [...] It has been the most enriching and wonderful experience in my life. I’m grateful to LUNEX and sporting for the big opportunity they have given me. I enjoyed every second working there and made me think about my future job working in a sports organization. I think that it’s a great chance to open doors and make contacts for the future, it’s an opportunity to expand our knowledge and become way better professionally. Read his entire testimonial here.

Pablo, Sport and Exercise Science student

On the home straight:
Career & perspectives

After completing your bachelor’s degree in sport and exercise sciences, you will have sought-after knowledge and skills in the areas of coaching and training, health and performance assessment and sports management. This will provide a good basis for building a career in the sports and health industry, entering the education sector or pursuing further studies.

Actively to the top after graduation

With an internationally recognised bachelor's degree in sports science, your career prospects are extremely versatile. For example, as an expert in exercise and training, you can work with sports teams and athletes and apply the knowledge you have gained during your studies to improve their sporting performance. If you enjoy working with children, then a job in sport and physical education and sports promotion might be the right choice for you. Your sport-related scientific knowledge and your management know-how will be also highly sought after in companies from the sports and health care industry. Potential employers are:

  • Sport clubs and associations
  • Health associations and institutions
  • Hospitals, clinics, therapy centres
  • Public authorities and health insurers
  • Universities, schools, further education centres and research institutions
  • Sport and fitness industry
  • Sports goods and training gear manufacturers
  • Personal training agencies

Considering both the greater competitiveness in sport and a growing ageing society with limited physical activity and poor nutritional habits, specialists in sports and exercise science are becoming increasingly important. The markets for sport, health and nutrition are growing steadily, thus offering varied and diverse employment opportunities.

As a sports science bachelor's graduate, you will have an excellent foundation upon which to start expanding your knowledge into further specialised areas. You might consider a master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science at LUNEX to gain expert skills and further increase your future career prospects. It is also your ticket for a career as physical education teacher as with the completion of a master's degree, you meet the criteria to participate in the Luxembourgish teacher selection procedure "Concours de recrutement pour le professorat de l’enseignement secondaire" (Concours) or to obtain the "certificat d'aptitude au professorat d'éducation physique et sportive" (CAPEPS) required in France. Alternatively, after your bachelor's degree you can complete additional courses to gain sport-specific coaching qualifications. Alternatively, you can also complete additional courses to gain higher sport-specific coaching qualifications. These and many more are possible:

  • Master’s degree
  • Gaining a coaching qualification with sport associations and specialised institutes (e.g. L'Ecole nationale de l'éducation physique et des sports in Luxembourg, Trainerakademie Köln in Germany)
  • Certified qualification as a sports therapist
  • Certified exercise practitioner (e.g. British Association of Sport and Exercise Science)
  • Certified (clinical) exercise physiologist (e.g. American College of Sports Medicine)
  • Certified personal trainer

Your equipment:
What you will need to bring with you

Is sport your passion? Can you motivate others? Are you interested in scientific issues within the sport sector and do you have analytical skills? Great, then you already have some of the most important qualities for the bachelor’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science.

Admission requirements

  • University entrance qualification or equivalent qualification
  • English Language Skills B2 Level (CEFR)

Level of fitness

As this is a science-focused degree programme, it is not necessary to be highly trained yourself or to be an expert in any particular sport. Nonetheless, you should be interested in exercise and sport and the science behind it and be able to enjoy it. Part of the practical lessons include the testing and training of others as well as yourself. This is a crucial ingredient for a successful career as for example a coach or sports teacher has to demonstrate how to perform certain exercises.

Application for a Bachelor’s programme:
1. Fill out our Online Application Form.
2. Take part in one of our Application Days. We will invite you to attend in person.
3. After successful participation in the Application Day we will email you with your study agreement. Please print it out, sign it and then send it to LUNEX by post or by e-mail, along with the evidence documents specified in the email.

Application for a Master’s programme:
1. Fill out our Online Application Form.
2. If you have met all the prerequisites for the Master’s programme, we will email you with your study agreement. Please read it carefully, print it out and sign it.
3. In order to complete your application, please send the signed study agreement along with all other required evidence documents by post to LUNEX.

As an applicant for one of our Bachelor’s programmes, you will be invited to attend an Application Day online. A selection procedure will take place on this day to check whether you meet the necessary prerequisites for the course.

More about the Application Day

The language of instruction in all courses at LUNEX is English. You should therefore be able to speak and understand English well. You have the opportunity to participate in the Pre-Bachelor Foundation Programme and improve your English if your language skills do not meet the entrance requirements for study at Bachelor level.

We will inform you in the course of the application process which supporting documents have to be provided and when. In principle, we need the following documents for your application:

  • Copy of your personal ID
  • Copy of the highest educational and/or vocational qualification
  • Language certificate (if applicable)

Depending on the degree programme (Bachelor/Master) and your country of origin (EU/non-EU), further documents may be required. More details will be provided to you in good time.

To secure a study place, we recommend that you send us your documents as soon as possible – but at the latest two weeks before the start of your studies. If you are an applicant from outside the EU, you should note that the application process for a visa can take four to 60 days. Please make sure you give yourself plenty of time.
