Your master plan:
What you can expect in the Master Sport and Exercise Science
Sport performance and health are influenced by a variety of factors. Therefore, as a master’s student, you will acquire in-depth knowledge not only in the core areas of sport and exercise science, such as physiology and biomechanics, but also develop a comprehensive understanding of related fields including sport psychology, nutrition and neuroscience.
The master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science takes four semesters including an internship and concludes with a master’s thesis. The focus of the course is on the assessment and optimisation of physical performance and health.
You will learn how to use state-of-the-art performance diagnostics for the acquisition of physiological data, how to analyse and interpret test results and how to translate your findings into training plans and programmes for different populations. In addition, you will further develop your academic skills by critically examining the sports science research literature and designing, conducting and evaluating your own research projects.
Course of study
1st year
You will develop an in-depth understanding of advanced testing and training methods in the core subjects and related disciplines of sport and exercise science including physiology, sports psychology, motor control and motor learning. You will gain more specialised expertise in the diagnostics of performance and health aspects and will be able to design and control assessment-based training programmes for athletes and patients. You will also identify different levels of psychological performance determinants for physical activity and exercise behaviours allowing you to implement strategies that optimise sport and exercise performance. You will also deepen your academic knowledge: You will learn how to design and carry out research projects and to analyse and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data with the help of statistical software.
2nd year
You will apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired so far during a 450-hour internship in a vocational field of your choice. In addition, transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving skills and analytical thinking are further developed. You will also take the next step in your technical field: you will gain a profound understanding of how nutrition affects health and performance. On this basis, you will develop diet plans for special (clinical) populations, sport teams and individual athletes. Finally, you will pursue and defend your own research project with your master’s thesis, in which you will demonstrate your acquired knowledge.
