LUNEX Research Strategy

The LUNEX Research Strategy begins with the Community, placing students, athletes, patients, scientists, and society at the heart of our approach. The Research Culture Pillars (Education, Environment, and Collaboration) create the values and conditions that foster quality, inclusivity, and engagement in research. Building on this foundation, the Research Pillars (Data, Projects, and Communication) transform this culture into structured activities and tangible outputs, ensuring alignment with institutional goals. Together, these two dimensions form a coherent pathway that advances excellence, drives innovation, and delivers lasting Scientific and Societal Impact for both the academic community and society at large.

LUNEX Research Pillars

Ambition
Collaboration lies at the heart of our research endeavours. LUNEX encourages interdisciplinary work that spans health sciences, sports sciences, management, and beyond. We actively engage with external partners, whether academic institutions, industry stakeholders, or local communities. We can tackle complex challenges that require diverse perspectives and expertise by fostering partnerships and working together.

  • Core Principle: Interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder engagement are essential for addressing the multifaceted challenges of research in today’s world.
  • Impact: Collaborative research that leads to innovative solutions enhances academic progress and societal well-being.

Priorities below should impact on the three sectors of impact: Prevention, Precise Performance and Rehabilitation, and Good Governance and emphasizes strategic action areas that align with growth and collaboration objectives.

Priorities
1. Establish strategic collaborations with leading universities, research institutions, and industries for applied research and innovation.
2. Promote interdisciplinary research to impact real-world problems.
3. Access expertise, infrastructure, and funding opportunities for national and international funding programs (e.g., Horizon Europe, NIH, etc.).
4. Supporting the Communication Pillar i.e. measure, showcase, and communicate research productivity to enhance visibility and impact.

Ambition
LUNEX’s ambition is to create a leading role in Research Communication, fostering a scientific culture internally and being externally recognized as experts in Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Governance. We emphasize the importance of making research findings accessible to various audiences, from fellow scientists to policymakers, industry leaders, and the general public. Through clear, transparent, and impactful communication, we ensure that our research has a tangible influence on policy, practice, and public understanding.

Priorities
1. INTERNAL COMMUNICATION
• Develop internal communication channels to present ongoing research such as progress updates, published articles, collaborative projects, datasets, or innovative methodologies.
“We aim to strengthen our organisational culture to create a strong sense of identity, belonging and shared values among students, faculty, sta8 and other stakeholders.” [Community Culture]
• Transition from the current data storage system to an online database for research updates. This tool could also support interdisciplinary collaboration in the future, by incorporating calendars for events, calls and congresses.
“Enable access to top-notch facilities in health and sport for academic and scientific purposes.” [Innovation and Technology]
2. EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION
• Showcase LUNEX achievements and target specific audiences aligned with institutional directions.
• Develop a visual identity for LUNEX research visibility.
“We strive to lead in education, research, and community impact, underpinned by our motto: Made in Luxembourg: Made at LUNEX.” [Vision]
3. BRIDGING Internal and External Communication
• Involve students in communication efforts, including content creation and even participation, providing incentives or recognition.
“We engage and empower individuals with empathy, compassion and responsiveness. Every student matters; We strive to inspire our students, creating role models within the health and sports sectors. In turn, they will inspire individuals, communities and society to care for themselves as well as for the lives of others.”[Core Values: Interaction; Inspiration]

Ambition
Data plays a critical role in advancing scientific research in the digital age. At LUNEX, we prioritise open science and transparent research data sharing, promoting collaboration and reproducibility. We also emphasize the importance of data-driven insights in health sciences, sports sciences, and management, ensuring that our research has the potential to transform practices and inform decision-making at all levels.

  • Core Principle: Data transparency and accessibility are essential for scientific advancement and societal impact.
  • Impact: Open and accessible data that fuels innovation, supports evidence-based practices, and enhances collaboration across the scientific community.

Priorities below should leverage the Data Pillar strategy to drive impactful advancements in the three sectors of influence: Prevention, Precise Performance and Rehabilitation, and Good Governance. This approach emphasizes the strategic use of transparent and data quality to support growth, collaboration, and informed decision-making, aligning with LUNEX’s institutional strategy.

Priorities
1. Data privacy and compliance: Quality assurance policy involving ethics and integrity in research.
2. Data quality and integrity: Ensure data is accurate (properly stored) and reliable, based on rigorous scientific methodology to make them reproducible.
3. Interdisciplinary data integration and management: Encourage data integration across programmes (health, sports, management) to foster cross-disciplinary insights.

Ambition
At LUNEX, research education is central to our mission. We believe in fostering continuous professional development, ensuring that researchers, whether students, early-career or established scientists have the necessary tools, knowledge, and guidance to succeed.
Our focus on mentorship and lifelong learning promotes curiosity, innovation, and ethical responsibility, ensuring that each researcher can grow and contribute meaningfully to their field.

  •  Core Principle: Lifelong learning and ethical development are essential to the growth of our researchers and the quality of our work.
  • Impact: A community of highly skilled, ethical, and innovative researchers equipped to contribute to advancing knowledge and address societal challenges.

Priorities
1. Develop educational offers for staff on soft and hard skills to facilitate their engagement and activities in research.
2. Develop electives for students focused on soft and hard skills in research and technologies aligned with internal and external needs (market oriented).

Ambition
Creating and maintaining a stimulating research environment is crucial to nurturing curiosity, innovation, and excellence. LUNEX is committed to providing access to cutting-edge technologies, state-of-the-art facilities, and a culture of inclusivity and support. By attracting top researchers and fostering a thriving academic community, we ensure that early-career and established scientists have the resources to pursue impactful research.

  • Core Principle: A supportive, resource-rich research environment is critical for fostering academic excellence and innovation.
  • Impact: An inspiring environment that enables researchers to push boundaries, develop groundbreaking ideas, and produce high-quality research.

Priorities
1. Stimulating student interest in and contribution to research.
2. Facilitate options for student and staff to actively participate in research projects.
3. Ensure top-level and state-of-the-art technology for research and teaching.
4. Develop initiatives for research-focused career and for attracting international top researchers.

Ambition
A commitment to innovation, ethical integrity, and precision guides LUNEX’s research projects. We encourage bold, creative approaches to solving global and local problems while maintaining the highest standards of ethical responsibility. Our research is designed to be rigorous, reproducible, and responsive to the community’s needs, ensuring that we generate scientifically sound and socially relevant solutions. By working on impactful research projects, LUNEX establishes itself as a thought leader and innovator in health, sports science, and management, attracting global collaborations and recognition.

  • Core Principle: Innovation, ethical integrity, and rigour are the hallmarks of impactful research.
  • Impact: Groundbreaking research that addresses real-world challenges while upholding the highest ethical standards and contributing to global and local development.
