Head of Department – Department of Management

Role purpose

Reporting to the Academic Director, the Head of the Department of Management is responsible for strategic leadership, academic and operational management of the Department. The role requires advancing the department’s educational, research and service missions in alignment with LUNEX’s strategy, enhancing programme quality, fostering innovation and growing the department’s reputation and impact.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and vision for the Department of Management, ensuring alignment with LUNEX’s strategy and the institution’s core values.
• Lead the design, development, delivery and review of Bachelor and Master programmes within the Department of Management to ensure relevance, excellence, graduate employability and research‐based teaching.
• Develop, implement and oversee a portfolio of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses in areas such as management, leadership, sport business, health management and wellbeing — ensuring responsiveness to market needs, professional standards and lifelong learning opportunities.
• Ensure all programmes meet internal and external quality assurance standards and oversee accreditation and reaccreditation activities.
• Develop and build the department’s research agenda in sport management.
• Strengthen and extend the existing network of academic, professional, and industry partnerships.
• Foster academic staff development, promote evidence‐based teaching and learning practices (including digitalisation and student‐centred learning) and incentivise research productivity and external engagement.
• Set and monitor KPIs for student satisfaction, retention, academic performance, graduate employability, research output, international partnerships, and ensure continuous improvement.
• Manage departmental budget, resource allocation (including staff, facilities, equipment), in collaboration with central services, to support the department’s strategic growth and operational efficiency.
• Enhance the department’s national and international profile through partnerships with industry, health & sport sectors, European networks, and engage with external stakeholders (employers, alumni, professional bodies).
• Ensure the student experience is at the heart of departmental operations—pre‐enrolment, teaching, research opportunities, internships, career support—and promote diversity, inclusion and internationalisation within the student body and staff.
• Act as a member of the institution’s leadership team, contributing to cross‐departmental initiatives, institution‐wide strategy implementation, and quality assurance governance.

Candidate profile

  • A doctoral degree (PhD) in Sport Management or a closely related field.
  • A strong record of academic leadership (preferably at department level) in a higher‐education institution, with experience of programme development, accreditation and academic governance.
  • Proven track record of research excellence in the relevant area, and ability to lead and grow a research agenda.
  • Sound understanding of quality assurance frameworks in higher education, and experience implementing internal QA systems.
  • Demonstrable experience in curriculum design, digitalisation of teaching and learning, fostering student‐centred pedagogies, and managing international programmes.
  • Financial and operational acumen – ability to manage budgets, resources and staff in a growth‐oriented higher education environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to engage with academic staff, students, external stakeholders (academic and industry partners, professional bodies), strong network orientation.
  • High level of fluency in English, and good working knowledge of French and/or German is strongly preferred.
  • Strategic thinker, change‐agent mindset, able to work in a dynamic, international and entrepreneurial higher‐education environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion, sustainable development and responsible management education.

Application for a Bachelor’s programme:
1. Fill out our Online Application Form.
2. Take part in one of our Application Days. We will invite you to attend in person.
3. After successful participation in the Application Day we will email you with your study agreement. Please print it out, sign it and then send it to LUNEX by post or by e-mail, along with the evidence documents specified in the email.

Application for a Master’s programme:
1. Fill out our Online Application Form.
2. If you have met all the prerequisites for the Master’s programme, we will email you with your study agreement. Please read it carefully, print it out and sign it.
3. In order to complete your application, please send the signed study agreement along with all other required evidence documents by post to LUNEX.

As an applicant for one of our Bachelor’s programmes, you will be invited to attend an Application Day online. A selection procedure will take place on this day to check whether you meet the necessary prerequisites for the course.

More about the Application Day

The language of instruction in all courses at LUNEX is English. You should therefore be able to speak and understand English well. You have the opportunity to participate in the Pre-Bachelor Foundation Programme and improve your English if your language skills do not meet the entrance requirements for study at Bachelor level.

We will inform you in the course of the application process which supporting documents have to be provided and when. In principle, we need the following documents for your application:

  • Copy of your personal ID
  • Copy of the highest educational and/or vocational qualification
  • Language certificate (if applicable)

Depending on the degree programme (Bachelor/Master) and your country of origin (EU/non-EU), further documents may be required. More details will be provided to you in good time.

To secure a study place, we recommend that you send us your documents as soon as possible – but at the latest two weeks before the start of your studies. If you are an applicant from outside the EU, you should note that the application process for a visa can take four to 60 days. Please make sure you give yourself plenty of time.
