Taking Anatomy Beyond the Textbook

The best anatomy lessons do not always stay in the textbook. Our first-year Bachelor in Physiotherapy students recently took their learning into practice, exploring the human body through body painting, palpation, and movement.

During the session, students identified and mapped different muscles directly onto the body, using palpation to locate anatomical structures and movement to better understand how muscles work. This gave them the opportunity to see the connection between anatomical structures and their function rather than learning them in isolation.

The practical approach also helped students develop skills that will be important throughout their physiotherapy education. Learning how to accurately locate and identify muscles through touch is an essential part of clinical assessment, while understanding how they contribute to movement provides a foundation for future rehabilitation work.

By combining theory with hands-on learning from the very beginning of their studies, students can build both their anatomical knowledge and their confidence in applying it in practice.
