Our profile

The Luxembourg Health & Sport Sciences Research Institute (LHSSRI) is a non-profit organisation (association sans but lucratif – ASBL) founded in 2018.

The LHSSRI is dedicated to developing and evaluating innovative approaches in health and sport science to improve well-being, mobility and quality of life across different populations. Beyond conducting pioneering research, LHSSRI fosters collaborations with universities, healthcare providers, and public engagement partners to maximise real-world impact.

The LHSSRI provides opportunities for both local and international communities to participate in innovative scientific activities, building a bridge between researchers and the related community.

Our mission

At the Luxembourg Health & Sport Sciences Research Institute (LHSSRI), we promote, execute, and support cutting-edge, community-centred health and sport research, co-creating knowledge with professional and public communities to improve well-being and quality of life.

Our vision

To lead the way in community-centred research in health and sports science.

Our activities

LHSSRI’s activities currently focus on:

Fall prevention & prediction strategies

The FLUX programme (Funded projects: FLUX 1 and FLUX 2) was established to address one of the most pressing challenges in ageing populations: the increased risk of falls and their impact on independence, health, and quality of life. Its unique contribution lies in combining motor, visual, and cognitive assessments to provide a more holistic understanding of fall risk, moving step by step from prevention to prediction, and ultimately towards shaping national strategies.

Wide scientific literacy and training, Community and public engagement in health promotion

The LHSSRI has placed strong emphasis on bringing science and health research closer to the community, developing innovative approaches to engage people of all ages in interactive, educational, and health-promoting activities. Two key projects exemplify this commitment: RePublic and Coding Through Movement.

Exergaming (Exercise Gaming) for Pain Control and Healthy Aging

This research line demonstrates that exergaming is both an effective and enjoyable tool for promoting health. Innovative game-based prototypes were developed specifically for pregnant women and older adults. Digital literacy emerged as a critical element influencing adoption and long-term engagement. The work established a strong interdisciplinary bridge between rehabilitation, gamification and behavioural design. Together, these outcomes lay the foundation for scalable, user-centred digital health interventions. (Funded Projects: EGEAN, EXALT)
