Alumni Spotlight: Caterina – From LUNEX to a PhD in Research

Caterina, 31, from Italy, graduated from our Master in Sport & Exercise Science in 2023. Her master's thesis explored Exoskeleton Gait Training in Multiple Sclerosis, laying the foundation for her current research career. Today, she is pursuing a PhD at the University of Pavia in Italy, where she continues to build on her passion for evidence-based research.

Looking back on her time at LUNEX, Caterina credits the programme with preparing her for the next step in her academic journey.

"LUNEX prepared me very well for my PhD and gave me the opportunity to do an exchange in Pavia. It also sparked my interest in research!"

Her story has come full circle. Caterina spent five years at LUNEX with the goal of completing an Erasmus exchange at the University of Pavia; an experience that ultimately opened the door to her PhD. Now, as she reaches the final stages of her doctorate, she has returned to LUNEX for an internship, bringing her academic journey back to where it began.

Along the way, Caterina was also recognised for her communication skills, winning the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, where participants present their research in just three minutes to a non-specialist audience.

Looking ahead, Caterina hopes to continue her career in research.
