A Physiotherapy Placement in Senegal: Emilie and Julie's Experience

Through their physiotherapy placement in Senegal, Emilie and Julie, third-year Bachelor in Physiotherapy students, divided their time between Mbour Public Hospital and working with professional basketball and football teams.

"Our placement takes place at the public hospital of Mbour. Every weekday morning, we work with patients at the hospital, before spending our afternoons with the basketball team at Institut Diambars (NBA Academy) or providing recovery sessions for the Keur Madior football team."

At the hospital, stroke rehabilitation is the condition Emilie and Julie see most often, but they have also treated patients with pathologies that are much less common in Europe, including sickle cell disease, facial paralysis, cerebral palsy and tuberculosis. This diversity has made every day a valuable learning experience.

"One of the biggest challenges has been adapting our practice with limited equipment while still providing effective care. Patients have to pay for their treatment themselves, so they often expect quick results. Many also begin physiotherapy months or even years after their diagnosis, making rehabilitation even more challenging."

Beyond the placement itself, their weekends have been an opportunity to discover Senegal, its culture, heritage and local way of life.

"What we have enjoyed the most is the diversity of the patients we work with, from professional athletes to children and elderly patients. And above all, the warmth of the Senegalese people. 'Teranga' is definitely not a myth."
